Everyone has seen the entrancing image of a magnificent steed as it gallops along the shoreline, the salty spray of the sea shooting into the air with each rhythmical beat of the horse's hooves. Maybe you've dreamed about being the person in the saddle, because you envy the glorious excitement that the rider must feel.
Wake up! You don't have to be the main character in a romance novel to enjoy such a transcendent experience. At Kelly Seahorse Ranch, you can indulge your sense of adventure to the fullest even if you've never been near a horse. Located at the southern tip of Amelia Island within the Talbot Island State Park, the Kelly Seahorse Ranch offers visitors one of the more unique experiences of a lifetime -- exploring the pristine beauty of the island on horseback during an hour-long, guided trail ride.
Don't worry if you've never ridden a horse. At the Kelly Seahorse Ranch, you'll be in the capable hands of James Kelly, a consummate professional horseman. Kelly owns the ranch and has spent his entire life around horses. In 1995, he was voted Outstanding Horseman in the North American Horseman's Association, a lifetime achievement award. He is also a therapeutic riding instructor for North American Riding for the Handicapped.
Kelly cares about his horses, and he cares about the environment. The trail taken by the horses goes through a wildlife sanctuary where many endangered species nest. "Horses properly ridden are part of the total environment," he says. "They blend in and do not disturb the wildlife."
The gentle pacing of the horses' hooves cause no damage to the trail and the surroundings, unlike the impact of motorized vehicles.
Kelly's horses are docile, disciplined, well-behaved and well cared for. Groups are limited to a dozen or so riders. One guide horse takes the lead, and another is placed at the rear as the ride begins and the horses trot leisurely. Along the trail, riders often encounter a wide variety of waterfowl and sea creatures, with sea turtles, blue heron, wood storks, osprey and even penguins the likely sights.
Reservations are a must. Visitors should arrive at the ranch 30 minutes before ride time. During that half-hour, the riding equipment is adjusted for each individual and riders are taught how to manage the reins to signal the horse when to turn, start and stop.
This type of caring and dedication to both rider and horse is what makes Kelly Seahorse Ranch an original. James Kelly says that more than 80 percent of his visitors have never ridden a horse. You can be sure this ride will not be their last. The perspective on horseback gives the rider an advantage of being able to see things that would be missed on a walking tour. It's an incredible way to appreciate the great natural beauty of Amelia Island.
