Thirty miles north of Jacksonville lies the pristine gem of Amelia Island. The island's unspoiled natural beauty and checkered past make it one of the South's more attractive and intriguing vacation destinations. Blessed with 13 miles of white sand shoreline considered to be among the 10 most beautiful beaches in America, Amelia Island beckons to sportsmen of every ilk. For lovers of golf, a truly magnificent golf experience is found at Amelia Island Plantation, Northeast Florida's premier resort.
Situated on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, this environmentally conscious resort was designed in harmony with nature. Lovers of the game will encounter thrilling golf on Amelia Island Plantation's 54 championship holes that offer some of the best golf you'll ever play. Three distinct 18-hole signature courses challenge players of all levels.
Built in the early 1970s, Pete Dye's Oak Marsh is a classic course with tight fairways and small greens. The course winds its way through salt marshes and stately oaks. This is a par-72 course with numerous water hazards and plenty of bulkhead greens. Bunkers were built into the design to increase the level of challenge. The natural environment of the grounds has been preserved, leaving the habitat of local wildlife undisturbed.
Ocean Links winds along a ridge of dunes and provides golfers with more oceanfront golf holes than any other course in America. Ocean breezes present players with some fascinating situations to overcome. Designed by Bobby Weed, the par-70 course strikes a parallel line to the beaches of Amelia Island and runs through a maritime hammock. Other features include lagoons and wetlands and a green placed in the waters of Red Maple Lake.
Tom Fazio's Long Point, like his other award-winning courses, includes natural hazards, elevated greens and tight fairways. The par-72 course rambles through thick woodlands, salt marshes and scenic shoreline dunes. On eight different occasions the golfer's shot must carry the water hazard. Long rolling greens and natural bunkers characterize Long Point and present golfers spectacular vistas of the Amelia River and the surrounding marshland.
Perhaps you don't quite play at pro level. Amelia Island Plantation has a golf school for players who want to improve their game. Ron Philos' School of Golf has a program to suit all interests and schedules. Choose from the 4-day Swingers School, the 3-day Weekender School, the Single Day School or Specialized Corporate Group Instruction.
